At Rugby Park Kilmarnock secured their second win in a row by defeating Rangers with 1-0.
Kilmarnock got the first big chance of the game. Butland couldn’t clear the ball after an attack into the box by Kyle Vassel, allowing Marley Watkins a strike on target. A last ditch effort by John Souttar kept the game level.
After several chances on both ends of the pitch, a cross into the Rangers box by Matty Kennedy got headed into the net by Robbie Deas. However, the goal was disallowed for offside.
The game flowed up and down, without either side gaining control of the game. Undoubtedly Killie caused most danger in front of Jack Butland, forcing the Rangers goalie into several acrobatic saves.
A long distance effort by Cyriel Dessers was heading for goal, but a quality save by Robby McCrorie kept the ball out, forcing the ball wide. It was the striker’s biggest chance of the game so far.
Rangers caused more danger in front of the Killie goal after half time. But it was Killie that kept getting the bigger chances. Kennedy broke free from the Rangers defence, but one-on-one with the goalkeeper he shot straight into the hands of Butland. On the counter Rangers failed to hit the target once more.
Several minutes later it was Watkins who secured victory for the home side in the 87th minute. A ball over the Rangers defence dropped before Watkins. The veteran winger managed to keep Souttar away from the ball and tap it past Butland and into the net: 1-0. In the remaining minutes Rangers couldn’t find the equaliser.
The first home win of the season takes Kilmarnock to the seventh spot on the table. Rangers remain third, six points behind Celtic.
