The provisional Scotland squad for Euro 2024 has been announced by manager Steve Clark today. The announcement comes less than a month before Scotland’s opening game.
The 28 names on the list are mostly familiar. However, probably the biggest surprise on the list is the name of uncapped Liverpool youngster Ben Doak. The 18 year old attacker is yet to play his first Premier League game, and only recently recovered after a knee injury. Bristol City defender Ross McCrorie is another player on the list yet to make his first cap for Scotland.
The name of veteran Celtic star James Forrest may lift some eyebrows as well. The 32 year old winger sees his name appear on the Scottish national team sheet for the first time in 3 years.
The most represented team on the list is Celtic. The newly crowned champions provide 4 players to the national squad list. Rangers, Heart of Midlothian and Norwich are also well represented, providing each 3 players.
UEFA announced earlier this month that each team can call up 26 instead of 23 players for the European football championship. The recent change followed after complaints from managers to take more players, especially in relation to the level of player injuries in modern football.
Even with an expanded group size, Steve Clark’s task will be to reduce the team’s size to 26 names by 7 June, before The Tartan Army head for Germany. The gaffer will have a little over 3 weeks to prepare his group for the opening game of UEFA Euro 2024 on 14 June.
The provisional Scotland squad for Euro 2024 includes the following names:
- Goalkeepers: Zander Clark (Heart of Midlothian), Craig Gordon (Heart of Midlothian), Angus Gunn (Norwich), Liam Kelly (Motherwell)
- Defenders: Liam Cooper (Leeds United), Grant Hanley (Norwich), Jack Hendry (Al-Ettifaq), Scott McKenna (FC Copenhagen), Ross McCrorie (Bristol City), Ryan Porteous (Watford), Anthony Ralston (Celtic), Andrew Robertson (Liverpool), John Souttar (Rangers), Greg Taylor (Celtic), Kieran Tierney (Real Sociedad)
- Midfielders: Stuart Armstrong (Southampton), Ryan Christie (AFC Bournemouth), Billy Gilmour (Brighton & Hove Albion FC), Ryan Jack (Rangers), John McGinn (Aston Villa), Callum McGregor (Celtic), Kenny McLean (Norwich), Scott McTominay (Manchester United)
- Attackers: Ché Adams (Southampton), Ben Doak (Liverpool), Lyndon Dykes (Queens Park Rangers), James Forrest (Celtic), Lawrence Shankland (Heart of Midlothian)
In preparation for Germany, Scotland will still play a friendly against Gibraltar on Monday, 3 June at the Estadio Algarve. Later that week Scotland will play Finland on Thursday, 7 June at Hampden Park. On 14 June Scotland will kick-off Euro 2024 facing home side Germany, at Munich’s Allianz Arena.
