Dundee F.C. or Dundee Football Club is a Scottish professional football club located in the city of Dundee, Angus. The club currently competes in the Scottish Premiership, the highest division in Scottish club football. The team are commonly referred to as “The Dark Blues” or “The Dee”.
The club was founded in 1893 after a merger between local clubs Dundee East End and Dundee Our Boys, in order to take part in the SFL. Dundee F.C. originally played their home games at Carolina Park. In 1899 the club moved to their current ground at Dens Park, a 11,775 capacity stadium, just north from the center of the city.
In the early 1900s the club celebrated several major successes, finishing as league runners-up three times and winning the Scottish Cup in 1910. The club went through a period of decline in the 1930s. After the Second World War, the club went through a revival. Under manager George Anderson the club achieved a runners-up finish in 1949 and two Scottish League Cup wins in 1952 and 1953.
The club’s most celebrated period was in the 1960s when, under the management of Bob Shankly, Dundee F.C. won the Scottish Football League title in 1962, before reaching the semi-finals of the 1962–1963 European Cup the following season. The club won the League Cup in the 1973–1974 season, which has been the last major trophy of Dundee F.C. to date.
The club has a long-standing rivalry with fellow Dundee side Dundee United, which plays their home games in the same street some 200 yards (183 metres) away.
