The SPFL has shared today that the second round draw for the Scottish League Cup, or Premier Sports Cup for sponsorship reasons, will take place on 28 July.
The draw on Sunday will determine who will play against who in the weekend of August 17 and 18. Just like in the first round, the second round matches will be broadcast live by Premier Sports. The draw itself will be broadcast live by the Scottish League Cup’s sponsor as well, directly after the conclusion of Motherwell versus Partick Thistle.
The last 16 stage of the competition will certainly feature Celtic, Rangers, Heart of Midlothian, Kilmarnock and St Mirren. The teams playing European football were automatically qualified for the second round.
Motherwell set to progress to the next round
The first round has seen Motherwell lead in Group G with 8 points, making them currently the leading team in the competition. The Steelman will finish their group stage with a match against Partick Thistle on 28 July, with the knowledge they are all but guaranteed to progress.
So far the biggest surprise of the competition has perhaps been Annan Athletic. The League One side lead in Group D with a relatively comfortable 7 points, after beating Inverness CT and Arbroath. This evening the Black and Golds Galabankies will face their biggest test yet when they visit Premiership side Dundee FC.
In the other groups the differences in points are too close to call. The final group matches take place in the coming days and will determine who will officially progress to the next round. The numbers one of each group and the best three runners-up will move on to the second round draw on 28 July.
